Working with it is pretty much the same as working with any metal lathe, it's more the operator than the machine that determines how difficult it is when using older metal lathes of an kind. Check to see if the spindle bearings are good, if they're taper bearings there isn't much problem finding new ones, but bushing bearings used on the earlier models will probably need to be made (not hard, but takes a bit of knowledge to do it right). This is an Atlas 10 lathe with the model number TV36 indicating it has taper bearings in the headstock with a vertical countershaft and a 36 bed length. I have a smaller version of that lathe made in the 1940's and had to make a new set of half nuts because I couldn't find any available at the time I needed them. New Steady Rest Jaws / Fingers with Roller Bearings for Craftsman Model 101 and Atlas 618 6 Lathes. Don't know how much use -and wear- it has but make sure the half nuts (they engage the lead screw to the carriage for threading and fine feeding) are in decent shape or check to see if they are available before you buy it. Atlas 618 / Craftsman 101 6 Lathe Steady Rest Jaws / Fingers with Bearings.
Parts for them are fairly easy to find if needed, but be sure to get one complete with a full set of change gears since buying them individually after the fact can get a bit expensive. Unfortunately, if the class was printed on the box, you couldn't really trust it unless you could somehow confirm that both the box and the contents actually came from Timken.Lots of those things out there, they made essentially the same models for many years. The Atlas bed is a rugged precision foundation that maintains. Last that I had heard, Timken was one of the few US manufacturers still making anything in the USA. 12' V-BED PRECISION LATHES Other features that contribute to the accuracy, efficiency. Lathe Dunlap 534.0601 9x30 Belt Driven Woodworking Lathe Original Thrust Bearing: SKF 465233 (ID: 1-7/16', OD: 7/8', W: 13/32') Atlas part number- L2-20 Single ball for pulley index pin: 3/16' diameter Atlas part number- 9-210 Craftsman 101.
And unless you were buying several hundred sets, probably you would have to buy them directly from Timken. Front spindle bearing is double row tapered roller bearing rear spindle bearing is single row tapered roller bearing, spring loaded for automatic adjustment. The spindle is mounted on selected precision bearings.
And I would guess that you would have to buy the cup and cone as a matched set. 3-9/16' Spindle bearings are larger see chart at right. Geared Lathe Machine offered by ATLAS MACHINES (INDIA) is available with multiple payment options. I would seriously doubt that the hand engraving that was done in the 30's, 40's and early 50's would be done today. I do know that a Class number could only be assigned (or more correctly, any number assigned could only be valid ) if the cup and cone were purchased together. I haven't heard of any of the spindle bearing in the Clausing badged lathes that were so marked. I know that around 1952/3, Atlas on their Atlas badged product quit having Timken engrave the inspection dates on the spindle bearings.
